Write Lyle a Letter!

Hi and welcome to my Letters page!      :)

Please won’t you share your thoughts about meanness and bullying in today’s world?

If you are here because you have seen the play “Sticks and Stones”, please let me know if you were able to relate to the story.

I wonder….

While you were watching the play, did it make you think?  What did you think about?  Did you connect to some of it or all of it?

Has Sticks and Stones changed your thoughts about meanness and bullying in your school and/or your life?  What will you do to help change happen?

Thanks for stopping by!

    COMMENT:
    dear lyle,
when you came to monhagen middle school i think some people learned how other people feel when they get bullied that they are thinking about how they would feel if they got bullied, so that leads to less bullying.

    ANSWER:
Yes! That is what a play does. It creates a picture of a situation that we can watch and judge. If we don’t like what we see we have to ask ourselves what we can do to change it. Everybody has the power to change. Everybody has the power to be the change!

    COMMENT:
    Dear Lyle,
In time (if you’re a bully) you start to think about how other people feel when you bully them. I don’t understand why people are or would even think that bullying is funny when it’s not. It hurts people, and this is coming from a sixth grader at monhagen middle school and stayed in the bullied section because not a lot of people like me.

    ANSWER:
Hey, some people never think about it feels and just go along with stuff because they want to fit in. :(
Things do get better but we need to get kids understand how hurtful it is. We call that empathy!
Maybe you could write a book about your experiences so that other kids who get hurt and bullied can know they are not alone.
    Good luck!

    QUESTION:
So, from your eyes…what else should we do to make life better for kids that feel unliked or bullied?

    ANSWER:
    From my eyes…
There is no easy answer to that question. Adults need to start early…really early with kids. Kindergarten early. Parents need to learn more skills in how to parent through these waters. There should be professional development workshops for parents to attend where they can pick up skills and talk about new strategies for the social and emotional well being of children. I for one, was not prepared as well as I wish I could have been. Teachers need to receive training also. Many schools across the country have not done this. There are many different models of school wide programs out there. Also,Programming should always include multiple approaches for different kinds of learners. Most important- Parents and teachers AND Community needs to connect develop a plan that everyone understands. From there we begin to focus on the children. We need to teach them how to be allies for one another…support one another…how to recognize when someone needs a friend and how to act…really ACT ON THAT KNOWLEDGE and become their friend. Kids need to learn different survival strategies than what they are using now. All this AND we live in a world where the media and the internet glorify bad choices and behaviors. There is no easy answer. I say it begins with education and communication. That’s just from my eyes. :)
